Dear Shane,

I can't believe you got on the radio and did something so dry! It was like your sermons. I fell asleep 14 times! LOL. Gotta keep pulling your chain.

Seriously, it was one of the best presentations on the subject that I've heard. You are so gifted in expressing God's Word and the truth about the church universal and Anglicanism in particular. At least that's from one non-cradle Anglican to another.

I am so blessed to be at St. George's: The Word both preached and taught, the grace of the sacraments, Christ's Real Presence at Communion, grace and a non-progamatic, non-performance oriented, heart-felt approach to reaching the un-churched and de-churched downtown as well as in each of our daily lives.

Shane -- you were awesome! There was no craziness but that which was fun and kept the deep interesting. You know how to play along, and you were excellent at staying on track. You know your Anglicanism and articulated well so much information. And most of all, you lifted up Jesus as being foremost in it all. May I say it?... I'm so proud of you.

Comment on Ezekiel’s Wife by Kevin Templeton

Enjoyed the lesson. I stumbled upon it while preparing a sermon on this very text. I agree the actions of God seem on the surface as somewhat unfair or at least extreme. I can't imagine God telling me he was going to kill my wife so that I could have a good sermon illustration on Sunday morning.

However, humble reflection upon a few biblical truths about God and man put this text into perspective for me.

1) Hath not the potter power over the clay ...(Rom. 9:21). God has absolute right over his creatures to do with us as he pleases. We can trust that God does what is always right because he is the 'only wise God.'
2) Life is a gift and not a right. We are all under the penalty of death because of sin.
3) God is transcendant, therefore, we cannot expect to understand all of his ways. "Who hath known the mind of the Lord..." asks the Apostle Paul.
4) The chief end of man is to bring glory to God and this was the purpose of God's actions as this lesson so well pointed out.

If we were granted an audience with Ezekiel and his wife today I doubt that either one would express feelings of being done wrong. Our earthly life contrasted with eternity makes any suffering we encounter for God's kingdom insignificant. 2Cor:4:17: For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;

I appreciate the thoughtful and well articulated review.
I have noticed from reading one of Bell's other worls ( "The Velvet Elvis") that he does tend to misread church history. He puts quite a bit of stock in people like Oriegen. Who, while very important, there were parts of his teachinsg condemned.
In fact the Eastern church does not classify Origen as a Church Father like Roman Catholics do.
I haven't read "Love Wins" and I'm not sure that I will. I do agree that God's love does win. It has won but no tin the simplistic fashion as Bell seems to have put forth.
Once again thank you for the review.

I was checking out your website today and saw this blog. I wish I had seen it back in April when I was reading the book. I confess I did not finish it but read enough to know that, although I appreciated Rob asking the questions, there was something that did not sit well with me...and I could not put words to it. You have done just that. Thank you.

This is a very good review! Thank you. I recently watched a very interesting interview with Rob Bell. I love the way the MSNBC host, Martin Bashir, seeks to hold him accountable to his claims!

Btw, look forward to seeing you on the 30th!

I appreciate your clearly articulated response to this controversial book. I'm only just hearing about it but I happened to be reading Tim Keller's "The Reason for God" at the moment that I stumbled into a discussion of Mr. Bell and his interesting thoughts. All I can say at this point is that I do hope believers will look carefully at whether they are shaping God to fit their own notions, or allowing the revelation He has given us, as it has been tried and tested through the millenia, to shape our view of God.

Great post Shane! What concerns me most about what Rob Bell is presenting is that it provides a way of escape from reality to a virtual non-existent reality.
