New ASU Dorms in Downtown Phoenix

August 6th, 2008 · 9 Comments

As many of you know, I have been talking about Arizona State University’s new Downtown Phoenix Campus (ASU DPC) for a while. It only started 2 years ago with the move of the College of Nursing and College of Public Programs to downtown. Here in a couple of weeks, the other major anchor college, The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, will have completed its move into its new building. The vision is that ASU DPC will have some 15,000 students attending classes within the next several years.

In conjunction with the movement of the the colleges, has been the building of 2 new dorm buildings called Taylor Place. These buildings will house 1300 students, who will be living in the heart of Downtown Phoenix between 2nd & 3rd Steets and Taylor Ave. This is right next to the Arizona Center. These students will be adding a youthful dynamic into Downtown Phoenix. Also, as I have been mentioning for a while, it is the younger generation who are connecting to the Ancient-Future Worship.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to take a tour of the new dorms as part of the Council of Religious Advisors (CORA) for ASU DPC. As a member of CORA, St. George’s is officially recognized by ASU to minister on campus to the students. Right now, everything is so brand new that the landscape is wide open. I am hoping to build some key partnerships with other churches/ministries and start reaching out. By early October, my intention is for St. George’s to have a weekly campus ministry up and running.

All of this is exciting and scary. I admit to a level of anxiousness that is uncomfortable. God put the vision in my heart for Downtown Phoenix 5 or 6 years ago. I have been in trying to faithfully pursue the vision since that time. This includes my journey into Anglicanism, ordination and the planting of St. George’s Anglican Community. This week I also went to part-time at Vanguard so that I can devote more time to St. George’s. IT IS HAPPENING! I know that this is God’s work, not mine, but living that out on a daily basis is the challenge. I covet, need and am very thankful for all of your prayers, support and involvement.

I am thankful for the work of God in this place. I believe God is raining down his love in downtown Phoenix and reclaiming this city for him.

Is there any suggestion that there will be a Chapel or otherwise designated meeting room made available for Chaplains to hold meetings, services, outreaches etc.? JL

That’s LLLeggat. I enjoy e.e. cummings but the reference was accidental :)

Thanks for all of your comments, prayers and support.
As to ministry, I am working with ASU right now to try and reserve some space on campus where we can be doing a weekly Bible study/worship/outreach night.
There is no general area at this time so designated.

Wow. Shane, I have wanting to tell you lately how proud I am of you, in case you didn’t know. Not to give you praise as this is all because of Him. But you have been faithful over these past years allowing God to prepare you for this very time. “He who has began a good work in you…”
You have listened to those in authority over you, you have been teachable and humble and you have matured so much in your faith. I am excited for what lies ahead for you, Kris and the kids. It’s all good anxiousness as you know God is in the middle of this, of downtown ASU. These students lives will never be the same once they encounter Jesus, because of you. I am praying for you in Wichita, Kansas. I love you.
